fish oilFish oil became #1 supplement in America in 2012 because it contains omega-3 that were thought to be very beneficial to health. Both physicians and patients are both consuming marine oil because it is thought to be good for the heart.

However, in 2013 it was reported in New England Journal of Medicine (NJM) that fish oil was completely ineffective in preventing heart disease. An extensive study has been done in Italy to a large group of high risk patients. Due to this report, theheart.org has recommended that you discontinue all fish oil supplementation for heart disease prevention.

Dr Eric Topol (Scripps Clinic, La Jolla, CA), editor in chief of theheart.org, posted a video blog on the site. “I have an awful lot of patients that come to me on fish oil, and I implore them to stop taking it,” said Topol. The present study, with its efficacious dose, arms physicians with data to tell patients who have not had an MI and who don’t have heart failure that n-3 fatty acid supplementation with fish oil is not effective. He called fish oil a “no-go,” noting that if the supplement had no effect in this high-risk patient population, of whom just 40% were taking statins, it’s hard to imagine n-3 fatty acids will provide any benefit in lower-risk subjects. “Fish oil does nothing,” continued Topol. “We can’t continue to argue that we didn’t give the right dose or the right preparation. It is a nada effect.”

There are inconvenient truths that everyone should know about fish oil. It is typically a highly processed food. Fish have no oil glands and think about rejected fish being processed to extract oil from it, it’s the worst way of getting Omega 3. A good source PEOS should come from “living foods” like seed oils.

Cancer research also revealed that fish oil increases the risk of colon cancer. Another inconvenient truth about fish oil is it is the ultimate anti-aging agent. It was also discovered in 2006 that it ruins mitochondria functionality which is a prime anti-aging factor. So instead of preventing aging, it accelerates human aging. In conclusion, these findings suggest that fish oil intake increases oxidative stress and it decreases lifespan.

    • […] A much better solution is to understand that PEOs alone often allow production of sufficient derivatives to help these conditions, without the problematic lowering of the entire immune system. Therefore, PEOs alone should be prescribed first. Taking a substance like fish oil prophylactically can bring about a great tragedy. Like steroids, fish oil may have a place in treating specific autoimmune diseases under direct physician care, for a finite period of time. Just like steroids, overuse of fish oil can cause a host of problems. […]
